Rochester State of the Lake Meeting 2/28/2012

Attached is a press release and announcement of the 2012 annual Lake Ontario Update meeting. It will take place at 7:00 PM on Tuesday February 28, 2012 in the Ingle Auditorium in the Student Union at Rochester Institute of Technology. This is the large auditorium where it was held a few years ago. Please note that the format will be a little different. Presentations by staff will be short. You will be able to review more detailed information from the DEC web site at http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/27068.html prior to the meeting. This will free up more time for questions and discussion with meeting participants.

Irondequoit Bay and Irondequoit bay outlet Sunday 8/21/2011

Small Mouth Bass
Are still a hard find in our old fishing spots on the lake such as in front of Hedges. Shipbuilders creek and in front of Webster pier show good signs of comeback using bass minnows or soft shell crabs. Remember KEEP BAIT OFF THE BOTTOM (unless your gobie fishing)

Large Mouth Bass
Once again, any cove in the bay will produce these fish. soft shell crabs or a top water lure of your choice.

Rock Bass

Have seemed to slow down considerably, however you can still catch a few using perch minnows, spikes or wax worms.

Sheep Head

Large in size and are being caught off the outlet bridge

Perch

They are just starting to come in at the end of Irondequoit and Webster pier. With the sizes being caught it looks like it will be a good year.

Walleye

Are being caught in the river by the falls, on worm crawler harnesses and also, off the Summerville pier at dust using stick baits.

PIKE

Are being caught in the Irondequoit bay outlet on the larger spoons, such as the Red and white or ¾ oz cleo.

Small Mouth Bass

This 4^th of July weekend is producing some nice smallmouth bass in the Irondequoit bay outlet. Soft shell crabs seem to be a favorite in the early morning hours before the boat traffic. Sheep head are also weighing in at good sizes.

Large Mouth Bass

Any cove in the bay will produce these fish. Once again soft shell crabs or a top water lure of your choice.

Rock Bass

Some of these rock bass are bigger than the small mouth we are catching. Although few in numbers, the size makes up for the quantity. Fish for these critters in between the rocks with soft shell crabs.

Sheep Head

Small in size but are being caught off the outlet bridge

Perch

Good luck with these fish. Small in size, yet A few are being caught off the end of Irondequoit pier. This changes daily so we might have to wait till they come in again.

Walleye

On the east side of the bay, north of the 104 bridge fish are being caught with crawler harnesses. Don’t expect to limit on this specie because numbers seem to be down.

Fishing report for June 21, 2011

The fishing for Perch from the Genesee River piers has been very good, anglers are catching them with minnows, people are just starting to catch sheephead from the piers also. Smallmouth Bass are biting in Long Pond and Cranberry Pond on leaches, crayfish and white jig heads with white mister twister tails.

Salmon & Trout fishing continues to be good in the lake off of Rochester and Irondequoit Bay, Brown trout in 25 to 40 foot of water, Lake Trout in good numbers out deep in 100 to 150 ft of water, a few salmon are also being caught. A 24 lb 10 oz Salmon was weighed in on June 18 for the summer LOC derby and is currently in first place.

April-May-June Rochester 2011 Trout and Salmon

The fishery has been very good to us on the front side of the season, the weather a different story. April right off the bat served up some of the best Brown Trout fishing ever. Great shoreline fishing both East and West of the Genesee produced a mixed bags of Browns, Coho’s and Steelhead. This inshore fishery carried later than normal into and through the month of May and transitioned later in the month to an offshore Steelhead bite as well with some Kings showing up. Early June we still had a good inshore fishery with Browns and offshore surface breaks providing anglers with good Steelhead, Coho and Laker top water action. As usual at some point in June we go through a transition period as the surface temps push down setting up a thermocline and the fish are scattered as they try to find their comfort zone. June has been a very interesting month. It started a little slow with the silver bite, but the Lake Trout action was great. Then we transitioned to unbelievable action with Atlantic Salmon and Domestic Rainbows. This past weekend the King Salmon and Steelhead Trout appeared. The fish are incredibly beautiful and big this year as our forage base seems to be bountiful with both Smelt and Alewife’s.

May Report for Lake Ontario Rochester

May has been a good month so far. Inshore waters are still producing browns and cohos and as you slide out to the deeper waters the lake trout are biting real well. Some kings and steelhead mixed in as well in the big water.

Most of the charter fleet is launched back in the water for the season. The reports so far out of Rochester have reflected great catches of brown trout and coho salmon.
